If you are only eight, or ten, or fifteen, or twenty pounds
overweight . . . any of the popular diet plans that promise weight loss without
hunger might work for you . . . and deliver on the promise. (All diets work . . . all diets fail).
If you are only a few pounds overweight . . . you may find a
diet plan that does not require discipline or will power.
But if you are obese . . . (or as I have been described by
those in the medical profession: Morbidly Obese) . . . forget it.
You can lose the weight . . . you can succeed . . . but the
best way out for you (and me) is to get HUNGRY.
I’m going to explain something that you already know and
understand . . .
Our body is a wonderful biological organism . . . we eat
food to feed, nourish, fuel, grow, and repair our body. Our body takes the food
that we eat and converts it into the energy that makes us go.
And . . . our body stores some of the food that we eat . . .
so that, if we ever get into a drought or famine situation, we will have
something to draw on to help us survive that rough patch.
When I was young . . . my body burned up EVERYTHING that I
ate.
My metabolism was a
voracious furnace!
You could always feel the HEAT coming off my body . . . not
a fever or a high temperature from illness or infection . . . but a youthful,
athletic combustion system that left no waste and stored very little.
But somewhere along the way my body aged!
Everything about my body . . . my physical makeup . . .
changed.
My metabolism changed . . . the furnace cooled off.
But something in my system DIDN’T change . . . the mechanism
that tells my body to store food kept right on chuggin’. It was working great!
Better than was actually required.
The excess fat that covers and fills my body today is stored
food.
And since it is in emergency storage . . . I can’t access it
– burn it – use it . . . unless there is an emergency.
I have to artificially create an emergency.
I have to be hungry.
For the morbidly obese person . . . me . . . cutting back
doesn’t make me hungry.
Cutting out certain foods doesn’t make me hungry.
Only changing WHAT I eat doesn’t always make me hungry.
I have only found one strategy that I can use that will
succeed in inducing genuine, gut-growling HUNGER . . . .
Fasting.
Only through NOT EATING was I able to experience true
hunger.
I discovered that though I was constantly craving food and
thinking about food and planning my next meal and convincing myself that I was
starving . . . I had probably never been
truly hungry before . . . in my entire life!
“Body! Why are you
storing all of the FAT????”
“For when there is no food to eat . . . and you get HUNGRY,”
he replied.
“So, Body . . . if my stomach is empty and my digestive
system is empty . . . you are going to reach into my stored food and get the
nourishment that I need?”
“Yes.”
Fat.
Nourishment. Food. Fuel.
Calories.
Steaks, potatoes, bread, gravy, soda pop, pizza, candy, pie, and cake . . . it’s
all in there . . . in my fat. Waiting to be consumed . . . turned into sugar
and dumped into my blood stream and carried to every part of my body.
All of the popular diets change and tweak and manipulate us
to create a weight loss scenario . . . but our systems were created to respond
to HUNGER.
The hungrier I am . . . the more weight I am losing.
More to come about fat . . . and hunger . . . and fasting.
